What is the Roles List used for?

I have a situation where I will need about 70 Roles.  I see that a Roles list has been created, but how would I get that to be utilized?  I figure I could change the "Roles" column in the default membership list to be a lookup column pointing to the Roles list instead of simply being a choice column, but I don't know if that would break the Roles membership provider or if anything else needs to be changed in the web.config.  Can anyone help out here?
